Woman Forced Into Her Home And Raped In Rittenhouse

Posted: Updated:

A night out with friends ends in terror and tragedy for one young woman.

Police say a man followed her home, and then raped her.

Police are now working with a number of strong clues in their hunt for the attacker.

Special victims detectives spent much of today gathering evidence from the victim's apartment. They're now pouring over clues and surveillance video to try to find the man who raped the young woman inside her own home not once but at least two times.

"It is shocking. You like to think stuff like that doesn't happen on your street let alone your neighborhood. Yeah it's shocking," said one neighbor.

Residents of the quiet Rittenhouse neighborhood were jolted by the sudden appearance of a crime scene on their street. Special victims investigators scoured a building along the 1900 block of Spruce Street after a 26-year-old doctor reports she was brutally raped in her home by a stranger.

"I've never heard any instances of crime at all much less something this terrible," said a neighbor of the area.

The victim told police she left Ladder 15 at 16th and Sansom after a night out with friends. She was walking home around 1:30 a.m. when police say a man rode up on a bicycle followed her and forced himself into her apartment. Police say the victim was raped repeatedly before her attacker fled and she was able to call for help.

Police say the suspect is between 25 and 30 years old 5 feet seven inches tall wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Surveillance video captured the man getting on and off his bike before and after the attack.

Young women around the neighborhood shaken. Camille Suarez often jogs these streets near her home. Like many there, she says she'll be taking extra precautions until this man is caught.

"Makes me feel a little unsafe and I'll have to think of something to make myself more safe when the sun goes down," she said.

The victim is recovering with her family, as the investigation continues.
