NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Some days being a newscaster is tough. This wasn't one of those days. Harley-Davidson unveiled Project Livewire, its first electric motorcycle. Fox 5 got on for a maiden voyage test drive. Head tingling with excitement, butterflies in my stomach, we got geared up and took off, attracting plenty of curiously wherever we went.

The prototype rode smoothly even on pothole-filled New York City streets. There are no gears. The throttle under the right hand controls everything. Pickup we found was fast: 0 to 60 in 4 seconds. For the record, we didn't go over 30 mph, Mayor de Blasio.

Distance is an issue: the bike has a range of 40 miles per charge, and a recharge takes about 3 hours. It is also very quiet. The trademark Harley muffler noise is gone. Instead, there is a low-level whirring sound. From a safety standpoint, many riders depend on the muffler noise for drivers to take notice.

Harley CMO Mark Hans Richer says it's a work in progress and that the feedback the company gets now will help it tweak the electric bike before it goes to market.
