Manhattan liquid spill prompts emergency response

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A private contractor working in a shed in Manhattan accidentally broke a pipeline on Monday, causing a liquid spill, according to a source.

Ethylene glycol, more commonly known as antifreeze, came gushing out of the busted pipeline between two office towers on Broad and South streets. Even small doses of antifreeze can be lethal of injected, but officials on scene said the public is safe.

The two buildings store 45,000 gallons of antifreeze, and so the pressure out the 1-inch pipe was substantial. Firefighters and building maintenance workers were able to locate and hut off a feeder valve, cutting the flow.

Eventually the DEP took over to clean up the mess.

Officials said nobody was hurt in this and that there is no threat to public safety. One man got some of the antifreeze on his clothing but is expected to be fine once he showered.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
