Wicked weather causes flooding, outages, wall collapse

Severe thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain ravaged the the Tristate New York area Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service issued a several weather alerts for the area, including Flash Flood Warnings and Watches because of the heavy rain from powerful thunderstorms. The Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for certain counties until Friday, July 4, at noon.

The storms knocked down trees and electrical lines, causing thousands to lose power. PSE&G reported 1,400 customers remained without power on Friday. The majority of the outages were in Essex County.

1 World Trade was struck by lightning. A portion of a wall in an underpass below the Brooklyn Bridge collapsed just before 8 p.m. 

Five people suffered minor injuries. 

A fire department spokesman says the collapse involved a roughly 25-foot wide section of the facade. The Dept. of Transportation said the collapse did not cause any structural damage to the bridge. There is no word on what caused the collapse.

Heavy rain, rough surf and more thunderstorms are expected this week in the Tristate region as Tropical Storm Arthur moves northward.

The storm became a hurricane on Thursday. It is not expected to make landfall.

"A cold front will approach on Thursday before slowly moving through the area Thursday night into Friday morning," the NWS said in a posting. "This front will interact with some tropical moisture streaming in from the south, resulting in periods of heavy rainfall."

On Wednesday, the air temperate and the high humidity made it feel like it was 100 degrees. Thursday won't be as hot but will still be humid.

New York City officials urged residents to guard against heat-related illness as the summer moves into full swing. The Health Department says more than 80 percent of heat stroke deaths in recent years involved victims who were in homes without air conditioning.

Citymeals-on-Wheels is making the same request. It's also providing extra bottled water to meal recipients, delivery staff and volunteers. Its deliverers will be on the lookout for signs of dehydration and heat sickness in the homebound elderly.

The shootout happened near West 4th Street and Jones Street. Speaking at a news conference, Mayor Bill de Blasio said the marshals and cop were taken to a local hospital with apparently non-life threatening injuries.

    As many as 300 people became involved in a massive brawl at a New Jersey wedding hall that ended with two arrests on Sunday night.  Middletown police say that the fight broke out at about 10:30 p.m. at the Jacques Reception Hall on Palmer Ave. in Middletown.

    An ex-convict suspected of gunning down a Nassau County police officer and then fatally shooting a carjacking victim was found guilty on all counts in the murders on Monday. Darrell Fuller, 33, shot and killed Police Officer Arthur Lopez in October 2012 who suspected he had been involved in a hit-and-run car accident. Authorities said Fuller then fled that shooting and killed the second victim, Raymond Facey of Queens, while stealing his vehicle.
