NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 12-year-old girl in Brooklyn Wednesday is in police custody, the NYPD said.

Robert Decarlo, 26, turned himself into police at a precinct in Brooklyn Thursday afternoon. He is suspected of driving a stolen minivan onto the sidewalk and striking a woman and her two daughters near Flatlands Avenue and East 46th Street at about 4:42 p.m. Thursday, police said.

A preliminary investigation showed he had lost control, the Associated Press. He has not been charged.

First responders rushed all three victims to Kings County Hospital, where Joey Sellers, 12, was pronounced dead, the NYPD said. Her 9-year-old sister and the 38-year-old mother were listed in critical condition.

The driver of the minivan fled the scene, prompting the NYPD manhunt and the release of Decarlo's name and photogrpah.

The 2005 Dodge Caravan was reported stolen Friday in another part of Brooklyn.

The Highway Collision Investigation Squad is leading the investigation, the NYPD said.

A new poll conducted by Quinnipiac University found overwhelming opposition to the way the arrest of Eric Garner was handled while the majority support the broken windows policy, which cracks down on low-level crimes to prevent bigger ones from occurring. Garner's death has brought the policy into the spotlight. The Staten Island man had been selling untaxed cigarettes when he was arrested. A police officer placed him in a chokehold and Garner died.
