Debilitated Battle Monument A Sad Sight In Trenton

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

During the 4th of July week especially you’d think it would be important to honor the symbol of America, the American flag. However, that isn’t necessarily the case at the Battle Monument in Trenton where the memorial is a complete wreck, so much so that a Kentucky couple volunteering with the Special Olympics complained to the state about the site.

The monument was supposed to memorialize veterans, both those who have served and those who are currently fighting for our country. But now a tattered flag hangs from a dilapidated flag pole, the fence that lines the property is broken and in pieces on the ground, the grass is overgrown and there is a closed sign hanging on the doors of the monument.

Councilwoman Caldwell-Wilson took action to get the tattered flag down and even purchased a new one on her own to replace it.

“You can’t just put up any regular flag and this is a very very large flag, but I figured that was the only way I was going to make this happen was just go purchase the flag myself,” she explained.

The flag cost Caldwell-Wilson over $350. She is now going around and collecting donations to fix the debilitated flagpole because both the state and Trenton will not pay for the restoration.

“Once we get the pole restored than we can get the veterans out here and the mayor and we can hoist the new flag,” she said.

Because of the construction needed on the pole, the new flag will not be waving red white and blue for the 4th of July.

The city’s Department of Recreation, Natural Resources and Culture is supposed to maintain more than 40 parks and recreation areas in Trenton, but there is no one that works for that department anymore.

Now, a group of veterans have volunteered to maintain the monument.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
