Storm Topples Trees In Northeast Philadelphia

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA-Storms packed high winds and caused problems across the area on Thursday, especially in Northeast Philadelphia.

It sounded like a bomb. A big bomb," said Ihsan Ahmed.

She got the scare of her life, she says, when a tree came crashing down just after she and her 2-year-old daughter got out of the car.

"30 seconds before it happened I grabbed my daughter and went inside and ran back to get my stuff out of my car," she said.

She says with the rain came strong winds and a signal that something was going to happen. Once inside her home here on Newtown Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia, she could hear the damage as it happened.

"It is it very scary. My daughter was screaming like crazy. I just grab her and went to the back room," said Amhmed.

Right next door, her neighbor Sally Schaible and her children were on the porch, but went inside because the rain got too heavy. The same tree took down wires and damaged part of her property.

"It took out a couple of sections of fencing and part of our porch roof," said Schaible.

In other parts of the Northeast there's similar damage. On the 600 block of Brighton the storm knocked a tree in the road and around Bustleton Avenue power is out. Neighbors say despite the damage, they're lucky.

"We definitely had some protection," said Schaible.
