Fire Officials Investigate Wayne Mansion Fire

Posted: Updated:

SkyFOX was flying over the scene of a 2-alarm house fire, which broke out late Wednesday afternoon in Delaware County.

Flames ripped through the Wayne mansion on the 200 block of Wyndom Lane.

The owner suffered only minor injuries, but the hard work he put into building his home is now lost.

Investigators said the owner was working on his car around 4:15 p.m. when it caught fire, then spread from the garage area to the house.

Onlookers watched in despair.

“It’s so sad because he built it with his own hands apparently and so seeing it burn like that is pretty sad," witness Luca Russo said.

Firefighters worked tirelessly to control the flames, but more erupted from the hotspots.

The other end of the house also has significant smoke damage.

Radnor’s Fire Investigator said crews weren’t thinking about how this was a multimillion dollar mansion while trying to extinguish the fire.

“One home is the same as another to me in Radnor Township or any other place. We respect, or at least I do the smallest home in Radnor as much as the biggest home," Radnor Fire Investigator Don Wood said.

Only the homeowner was hurt, suffering minor burns, but the summer heat made the battle draining for some firefighters.

Neighbors said the owner is a mason and does stonework on the Main Line.

They feel terrible that something he worked on for years now is destroyed.

“I just can’t imagine if that ever happened to someone. It’s just horrible and we need to support them and help them as much as we can as a community," neighbor Sarah Sobel said.

Fire investigators will come back Thursday morning and clear off the debris to continue their investigation.
