Families Of Gesner Street Fire Victims Search For Answers

Posted: Updated:

SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA-The families of the four children who died in Saturday’s fatal blaze on the 6500 block of Gesner Street are now asking what could have started the fire.

Fox 29's Dave Schratwieser reports from Southwest Philadelphia where emotions are still running high.

“I walk away with nothing,” said Patrick Sanyeah.

Sanyeah left a city hall meeting Wednesday morning, frustrated and in tears, still searching for answers in the death of his two young sons and two other children in Saturday’s 3-alarm inferno.

“I want some answers. I want to know who, why, when,” he said.

4-year-old Patrick Sanyeah and 3-week-old Taj Jacque perished in the fire that swept through nine homes in a matter of minutes. 4-year-old twins Marie and Mariallah Boawah also lost their lives. Sanyeah wants to know what touched off the deadly blaze.

“I want to know if it's a murder, I wanna know if it’s an incident . I want to know if somebody did it intentionally,” said Sanyeah. “Who was involved? We want to know the people. And why they did that.”

Waday Seton's sister and niece are still hospitalized with serious injuries from the fire. She also wants investigators to find out what caused the fire and if anyone should be held responsible.

“I want to know what started the fire. People were sleeping 2 o’clock in the night and the house just caught on fire,” said Senton.

Only Fox 29 was there as detectives and fire investigators returned to the scene. They're still trying to pin down the cause. They went door-to-door and spoke with neighbors as they look into reports that fireworks may have ignited a couch on the front porch where the blaze began. Marcus Yarborough is one of many 9-1-1 callers.

Meanwhile, investigators continue to search for answers on what touched off the deadly blaze. If you would like to donate to the victims, please visit https://www.redcross.org/quickdonate/index.jsp?donationProdId=prod60003. According to the donation centers,  the families have received enough clothing, but are still in need of water, other drinkable items and non-perishable food.
