Police: Man Held Woman Hostage Inside Germantown Apartment

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA - Police say a woman was held hostage inside an apartment on the 100 block of West Queen Lane.

According to authorities, a barricade was declared at 6:51 p.m. on Wednesday, and a staging area was set up on Green Street and Queen Lane.

Neighbors were ordered back into their homes and the SWAT team was called.

"They knock on the door, a male refused to answered the door, and he shouted at police, if you come in the door I’m gonna shoot at police,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

When police entered the apartment, they found a 27-year-old woman tied up in the bathroom. Police say the victim claims she was sexually assaulted.

The victim was transport to Albert Einstein Medical Center for bruises to her wrists and she's being checked out, according to Chief Small.

The suspect, who police say is a 40-year-old man, was taken into custody at 6:57 p.m. without incident. Authorities say no weapon has been recovered.

Neighbors say the man and woman used to be a couple. Neighbors describe their relationship as “troubled.”

Police are waiting for a search warrant to search the apartment. The man remains in police custody,  and the woman will be questioned by Special Victims Unit once she's released from the hospital.
