JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - A police officer in New Jersey's second-largest city shot a man who authorities say attacked the officer and another with a sharpened fence post.
Tuesday morning's attack and shooting in Jersey City comes days after a rookie police officer was gunned down in an ambush.
The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office says two emergency services police officers had ordered him to drop the post.
Authorities say the 25-year-old threw it through the passenger window, hitting an officer in the head. Authorities say the man then grabbed the officer's rifle.
The officer discharged his firearm through the door.
Both officers exited the vehicle. One officer opened fire after authorities say the man hid a hand in his waistband.
The prosecutor's office says the man is undergoing surgery and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
