Rookie JC Cop Killed By Fame Seeking Thug

Posted: Updated:
Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Rookie Jersey City cop, Melvin Santiago, was gunned down Sunday around 4:00am at a Walgreens in town by a man seeking fame.

The criminal went into the store, assaulted an armed security officer and took his gun. He then went outside and said to a witness, ‘make sure you watch the news tonight, I’m going to be famous’. When Santiago and another officer pulled up in a patrol car, the thug opened fire on the vehicle ultimately killing Officer Santiago.

Once backup arrived the armed suspect was shot and killed on the scene.

Officer Santiago had just graduated from the academy and was a newly appointed member of the Jersey City police department.

Santiago’s grieving step-father Alex McBride and mother Cathy McBride pleaded to press and other media outlets not to give the shooter notoriety as he had hoped.

“The devil that did this to my son, he don’t deserve for his name, or balloons or anything to be on his front step where he lived. I wish I had the chance to take the bullet for my son, he didn’t know it was coming, my son didn’t even have a fighting chance,” Alex said.

“He wanted this and he wanted to be famous and he deserves nothing. He gets no points for killing my son. He was adoring to his brother, he has a 13 year-old brother and his whole purpose was to make sure he went to college so he didn’t have to take a dangerous job and he had a chance at a good life,” Cathy exclaimed.

Outside the Walgreens a makeshift memorial for Officer Santiago was put up by residents of the community to remember and honor his life that was taken too soon.

Sadly, another memorial had also been put up across the street for the gunman and

Mayor Steven Fulop commented on this insensitive display.

“For people to memorialize him I don’t think its representative of the overall Jersey City community,”

The funeral for Officer Santiago will be held Friday in Jersey City.
