TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez has spent about $650,000 on his legal defense related to Justice Department and Senate Ethics Committee investigations into his ties to a major donor.
An Internal Revenue Service report released Tuesday shows the Democrat has spent $250,000 from his legal defense fund along with almost $400,000 that his campaign account has paid for legal bills.
The Record (http://bit.ly/1oHlWsU ) newspaper reports 41 people gave Menendez more than $300,000 for his legal defense fund over the last three months.
Among the donors are Port Authority commissioner David Steiner and financier Philip Darivoff and his wife. All gave $10,000.
Menendez has drawn scrutiny over his relationship with Florida eye doctor and major donor Salomon Melgen.
