Polar Vortex Taking Its Toll On Summer In New Jersey

Posted: Updated:
Ocean Grove, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

It looks like you may have to trade in your beach blanket for a scarf over the next few days as a polar vortex heads into our area.

The severe storms that started Monday night will bring in a chill with powerful winds, and heavy rains.

Joe Miketta is in charge of monitoring the radar at the National Weather Service and he warns New Jersey residents to be cautious if they need to leave their homes for any reason.

“There’s a potential for damaging wind, a lot of lightning, even heavy rain and hail. So the best place to be during a situation is inside not outside,” he warned.

Like the polar vortex, that produced a series of snowstorms and subzero temperatures back in January and February, this series of weather patterns is also caused by a shift in the jet stream.

Meteorologists warn of wind gusts of 58 mph or higher which could possibly cause tornados. In addition, these weather patterns also mean the potential for above or below-average temperatures or even a heat wave.

“I would expect there to be some periods of above normal temperatures or below normal temperatures maybe averaging near normal or slightly above,” Miketta said.

The last two days this wicked weather has been coming and going across the Garden State and last night two homes in Ocean Grove, New Jersey were actually hit directly with lightning.

Angela Colazzo and Marvin Gregory say that they were just enjoying some TV at home when all of a sudden their apartment was struck by lightning.

“We heard the biggest boom in the world. There were two it’s like they connected, I closed my eyes,” Colazzo explained.

“I just thank god I’m here man that’s all, so blessed man, God was with me, my number wasn’t ready yet,” Gregory exclaimed.

The blast left the two without any working electronics. The television, the cable box, even the PS3 wouldn’t work. The building sustained some damage along the roofline.

Just two blocks down the road, Chris O’Gorman’s neighbor’s home was also struck by lightning which blew out a section of the roof and the windows on the top floor. O’Gorman says that he was outside in the driveway when it hit.

“You feel it and then when the wood hits on the ground next to you like ten feet away, your first reaction is to look up, I looked up at my own porch and said its purple wood and we don’t have purple wood,” he explained.

It looks like after Superstorm Sandy many New Jersey residents are taking these smaller storms in stride.

“Compared to Sandy, honestly, this isn’t that bad,” O’Gorman said.

Sadly, Jeter the pit bull puppy is missing. While dogs go missing all the time, there are two specific things that distinguish this story from others. First, several witnesses say Jeter didn't wonder off and that they saw Jeter get taken. Second, the community has rallied in a huge way to help find the loveable pup.

Empty spaces are popping up all over Atlantic City with the closing of three major casinos: Revel, Trump Plaza, and Showboat. Even with all of this going on, the city is still trying to use eminent domain to take away the home of an Atlantic City local legend, Piano Man Charlie Birnbaum. Birnbaum has tuned pianos for icons like: Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, and John Legend. He's been a resident of Atlantic City in the same home for over 50 years.
