Distracted at work? Your productivity tumbles

Hey! Want to hear a funny joke? Interruptions in the workplace take many forms. It could be an interruption from your boss, students, friends, coworkers, family, partner, and more.

"It's not just the people in your office. It's every piece of equipment you have around you," says Dr. Cooper Lawrence, a psychologist. She says that when she works from home interruptions walk on four shaggy legs looking for biscuits and a good scratching.

"It's hard to get started again and what happens is we do broad strokes," she says. "You don't get into the details of it."

Researchers at George Mason University recently concluded the same thing. Writers especially produce a better product when they can scribble uninterrupted.

"The older you are the more likely you are able to handle the interruption better," Lawrence says.

A study out of oxford reached that conclusion. Aging brains return to their work more seamlessly than their younger counterparts.

"Another study found that we are interrupted 73 times a day in a regular office setting," Lawrence says.

We've got studies on studies for you in this story. With more sources of distraction than ever before, one might expect the average number of interruptions on a given day to rise and, if George Mason got it right, office productivity to decline.
