POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. (AP) - One of the harbor seals that has entertained visitors for more than two decades at New Jersey's Jenkinson's Aquarium has died.
Coral was 23 years old.
Coral had a bloody nose on Saturday, which isn't uncommon when seals shed their fur. When the bleeding didn't stop, a veterinarian was called. The seal didn't recover and died.
Aquarium director Cindy Claus tells the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/1mPJ6Rj ) an initial necropsy was inconclusive and the results of additional tests could take weeks. Claus says Coral was like a family member and her death has been difficult on the staff.
Coral and her sister, Seaquin, came to the aquarium on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk in 1992 as companions for another harbor seal, Luseal. Seaquin and Luseal remain.
