New York's microbrew industry growing

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Local and small beer brewing companies have something to toast. The Brewers Association says microbrew sales grew in the first half of this year; up 18 percent over the same period last year. This comes at a time when overall domestic beer consumption is flat.

Ethan Long, one of the owners of the Rockaway Brewing Company in Long Island City, started brewing beer two years ago. Right now, the company only distributes to local pubs but he said he hopes one day his beer will be more widely available.

Rockaway is one of several small brewers that have opened in New York in recent years. Several of the new brewers are based in Queens.

Brewers are cashing in on an increasing demand for a more full-bodied and hand-crafted beer.
