Startup Company’s Marketing Campaign Raises Eyebrows

Posted: Updated:
UNIVERSITY CITY -

FOX 29 viewers called us, tweeted us and sent emails asking to see if we could figure out what exactly discarded plastic pouches being left around University City were.

So, FOX 29's Sabina Kuriakose went digging to find out.

We found out the bags were actually filled with catnip. We followed the logo stamped on the bags to a local street clothing startup, Sank Apparel.

Sank co-founder Michael Ferry says the drug reference is to marijuana. He says 2,000 bags were handed out Thursday night as marketing gimmick, but not everyone got the joke.

"We did get a few angry emails from I guess house mothers at UPenn, who kindly asked us not to throw dime bags on theory front porch, but that wasn't our intention to litter. Once it got out of our hands, it was out of our control,” said Ferry.

Sank Apparel says the message was anti-drug, poking fun at other clothing companies it says promote drug use.

They say they never meant to offend anyone. Still, people FOX 29 spoke with insist the marketing ploy may gone too far.
