Brazen gas station bandit caught on camera

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (WJBK) -
No one thought to shut the bullet proof glass. It was 8:15 on a Saturday morning in St. Clair Shores.

That will now change after a brazen bandit  who did nothing  to conceal his indemnity, robbed the owner of the sunoco gas station at Harper and Masonic.

"Scary," Dionne Bastian, a Sunoco employee said. "It could have been me."

Bastian said her boss was working the counter at the time when this man sauntered up looking to buy a red pop, but apparently that was a ruse.

"Mike stepped back to give him the change," Bastian said. "As he was getting ready to hand it to him, he saw the gun, he backed up and the gentleman said give him all your money."

Security cameras capture a clear shot of the thief, who police say pulled out a revolver and demanded all the cash.

The suspect reaches over the counter to grab what he can, tries to shove it in his pocket, but gets a little sloppy. He scrambles to pick up the money he dropped and runs out the door.

"He appears he has done this in the past , he seemed very confident," said Det. Margaret Eidt. "He made sure not to leave any fingerprints on the cooler door where he got the pop, also when he leaned over. He made sure skin wasn't exposed counter area."

Police want viewers to get a good look at the suspect. Employees at the Sunoco don't recognize him, but they hope someone watching at home does, paying special attention to the unique baseball cap he was wearing.

It has a double circle with a triangle running through it.

Luckily no one was injured and now workers like Bastian have been told what to do to keep it that way.

"People telling me to keep the glass doors locked and be safe," she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call St. Clair Shores Police at (586) 445-5300.

UPDATE: Crime Stoppers of Michigan is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect. Call 1-800-SPEAK-UP, you never have to leave your name.
