Squatters Vandalize Warehouse Full Of Supplies For Veterans In Need

Posted: Updated:

PASCO COUNTY, FL- A warehouse holding much needed supplies for U.S. Veterans is vandalized by squatters.

Volunteers say the mess was all created by Caleb Overbey, Allison Pfiffer, and Kevin McKenzie over the span of a couple weeks.

"There was lots of open containers of food they'd been eating, trash clothing, things they had rummaged through - our supplies and items that were damaged," said Pasco Stand Down co-director Patti Templeton.

The cleanup effort was quickly organized after the discovery Friday.

Pasco County Stand Down was expecting the latest shipment of equipment for its October event benefitting homeless and at-risk veterans.

Co-director Brian Anderson says that's when they opened the warehouse and discovered.

"3 people were living here, ravaging our equipment tearing stuff up... they hotwired the forklift... crashed it into the walls," said Anderson.

Anderson says the trio also pawned some of the supplies, intended for the veterans.

But he says the real slap in the face... Is at least 2 of the squatters were benefitting from the homeless outreach group that owns the building.

"They were living in this facility which is owned by the ROPE Center and 2 of them got picked up eating dinner at the ROPE Center. I think for every single person the reaction was the same. Just a tough knot in your stomach. It's really hard when you're serving folks and something like this happens."

A dirty blow -- volunteers say -- but nothing they can't clean up with the community's help.

"It was very sad. Very sad. Sometimes a negative thing can bring a community stronger together and i think this evidences that quite well," said a volunteer.
