#1000blackgirlbooks
An 11-year-old girl in West Orange is making quite the name for herself. We all should take a page out of Marley Dias' book. The sixth grader is the founder of the growing movement on social media, #1000blackgirlbooks.
We chased Marley in action at a book drive and psuedo pep rally at her old elementary school, St. Cloud. There were lots of excited children who participated in stacking contest with the books. Marley introduced two of her favorite authors to speak with the children: Rita Williams Garcia and Jacqueline Woodson. Marley is all about making sure girls like herself feature black women role models they can identify with.
She's been honored by local government, traveled to Ghana and fed orphans and made an appearance on "Ellen."
