Can collectors of New York City

In Bushwick, Brooklyn, hundreds of can collectors sort through their treasures, turning garbage into wads of cash. They congregate at the nonprofit, Sure We Can, a redemption center created in 2007 as a place for collectors to exchange cans and bottles for 5 cents each.

It's work that often goes under the radar. The can collectors say they work 10 to 15 hours each day, sometimes starting at 4 a.m., if not earlier. Brooklyn artists are now raising awareness about their good deeds, decorating the carts they use to haul their goods.
