New Jersey war memorial in jeopardy
Monday afternoon, Hank Flynn paid a visit to the USS Ling in Hackensack, N.J. While taking video, he saw men in a rowboat attempting to steal part of the ship. The USS Ling is federal property and whether they know it or not -- that would be a federal crime.
The USS Ling is a World War II-era submarine that school kids, veterans, and history buffs visit. The lease, however, is coming to an end.
"We're very clear on what the property owner is doing," says Gil de Laat, president of the Submarine Memorial Association. "And that's get out." The museum's on borrowed time, sitting on ground it doesn't own.
The ship sits in 6 feet of water, mired in mud. It can't be moved. Most acknowledge that if she can't be moved somehow, she'll simply be left to sink rusting into the mud.
