Rains cause flooding across tri-state region

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Daylong rains are pounding northeastern New Jersey and stranding motorists through the region.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning through 7 p.m. for towns extending from East Rutherford, Hasbrouck Heights and Hackensack north to Oradell and east to Cliffside Park and Fort Lee.

Towns in central New Jersey including Trenton and Princeton are under a flash flood warning until 9:15 p.m.

The downpour forced the closure of parts of Routes 1&9 between Newark and Jersey City. Police and emergency crews had to rescue dozens of stranded motorists in Bayonne, Hackensack, North Bergen and Fairview.

Showers are expected to taper off overnight, but more rain is forecast for Wednesday.
