Cash-only bond set for man accused of murder and arson

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A cash-only bond has been set for a 38-year-old man accused of murder, burglary, assault, and arson.

According to court documents, band for Curtis Lamont Bagley is set at $1 million, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 11 in Phoenix.

Bagley was identified by Phoenix Police as the person arrested for starting a fire and killing another man. According to reports, officers were sent to the 500 block of W. Willetta Street in the early morning hours of March 31, and a 24-year-old woman told police she was confronted by a suspect when she got home from work. Later, the woman heard a noise and opened her front interior door, where the man was on the porch, pouring gasoline on the outer security door and porch.

The suspect, according to reports at the time, lit the door on fire, and as the woman was calling her neighbors for help, he allegedly broke into the back door. The neighbor was able to help the woman leave the home, and the suspect left the area.

Later, as police were investigating the incident, they received an emergency call of a burglary at 3rd Avenue and Willetta Street, and when officers arrived at the scene, they saw the same suspect standing in the front yard, with blood on his clothes. When officers entered a home, they found a man, later identified as 36-year-old Joshua Fitzpatrick, lying on the floor with critical injuries. That man was later pronounced dead at the scene.

According to court documents, Bagley is a homeless man with numerous arrests, and when he was arrested, he reportedly began laughing, and sang a country song.

Meanwhile, people who live in Willetta Street are still trying to wrap their heads around what happened.

"You don't expect that," said Teresa Clark. "You kind of get in a comfort zone. This is a nice neighborhood. Things like that don't happen, but apparently they do."
