Couple renews wedding vows after 75 years married
POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - A couple in New York couple proves true love can last forever. After 75 years of marriage, they renewed their vows in front of family in friends.
Standing the test of time, Karl and Elizabeth Gfatter renewed their vows Monday afternoon. The couple recently moved into a senior care facility in Poughkeepsie, New York, and they were overwhelmed with joy as staff and administrators celebrated their special occasion.
So, what’s their secret?
"Love and honesty, and be good to each other," Elizabeth explained, holding her husband’s hand.
But the couple had their share of hard times. When they were married, in 1941, friends and family said they wouldn’t last and they were too young to be married.
"We eloped… because they didn't want us to get married yet. They said we were too young," Elizabeth said.
Karl knew they were in it for the long haul. He even put money on it.
"He said, 'I'll tell you what, if it lasts more than a year, I'll give you 100 bucks'," he said.
And Elizabeth knew she found her prince.
"He just said he loved me, and that's all that mattered," she recalled.
Their celebration was complete with a stroll down the aisle, a wedding party and refreshments. Congratulations to the happy couple.
