Escaped prisoner captured along Garden State Parkway
NEW JERSEY (FOX 5 NY) - Arthur Buckel, 38, who had escaped from Bayside State Prison in Hammonton, New Jersey, was captured Monday along the Garden State Parkway in Ocean County.
The Ocean County Sheriff's Office made the announcement via Facebook.
"UPDATED 5-6-16....Arthur Buckel who escaped from Ancora last Tuesday has been apprehended along the Garden State Parkway in Ocean County according to the Department of Corrections....."
Buckel, who once served time for manslaughter for killing a baby, was spotted Sunday just after 11 p.m. near the Forked River Rest Area in Lacey Township.
Buckel had reportedly indicated a desire to turn himself in and had been making arrangements through family and the state police to do so at the rest area, but walked off before police could get there.
Buckel was found missing last Tuesday when guards did a count at Bayside State Prison.
Surveillance video captured Buckel shopping at a CVS the following day.
It is not clear if he walked off or entered a vehicle.
Buckel had been serving a sentence for aggravated assault and was scheduled to be considered for parole this month. He previously served 14 years for aggravated manslaughter of a baby.
He is now clean shaven, according to police, and was last seen wearing a grey, long-sleeve sweatshirt, grey shorts and work boots.
Photos were released of Buckel taken from surveillance camera footage Sunday at the Forked River Rest Area.
