Frigid air brings snow into NYC area

NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - The snow was making its way out of the New York City area Friday afternoon and leaving behind frigid temperatures.

As much as five inches of snow will have fallen in the city once the storm is gone. Warmer weather in recent days has kept the ground warm causing minor accumulation in the city.

Areas north and west of the city are seeing higher accumulations with central and southern New Jersey receiving less.

Meteorologist Mike Woods says snow fall should taper down by the afternoon.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 2 p.m. for the Tri-State Region including all of Long Island.

NJ Transit rail is cross-honoring tickets and passes from NJ Transit bus and private carriers system-wide.

Alternate side of the street parking is suspended in New York City on Friday.

"New Yorkers should allow for extra travel time and be prepared for slick road conditions," said NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito.

"We are also expecting extremely cold temperatures this weekend, so check in on your family, neighbors, the elderly, or others with increased health risks to make sure they are protected from the extreme cold."
