Homicide detective shot in head in Baltimore, police say

Baltimore police are searching for a suspect who shot a homicide detective in the head Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, the shooting happened in the 900 block of Bennett Place in West Baltimore at around 4:30 p.m.

The 18-year veteran of the department was taken to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he is in very grave condition and on life support.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said the detective was on-duty conducting a follow-up investigation in the area when he was wounded. The gunman remains at-large. He was only described as an African-American man wearing a black jacket with a white stripe.


Officers cordoned off streets and combed alleyways as they searched for a shooter. Numerous cruisers responded and a police helicopter buzzed overhead.

The area where the officer was shot has a number of vacant rowhouses and has been the scene of numerous shootings.

A $64,000 reward has been offered in this case.
