SUMPTER TOWNHSIP, Mich. (WJBK) - Police in Sumpter Township have obtained an arrest warrant for the mother of a 4-year-old girl who died on New Year's Day and also for the mother's boyfriend.
Police announced the arrest warrant was issued on Monday for Candice Renea Diaz and her boyfriend, Brad Edward Fields for murder, child abuse, and torture.
According to police, Diaz's 4-year-old daughter, Gabby, was found dead in a mobile home in Sumpter Township last week. Police said the girl had burns over most of her body.
On January 3, Gabby's death was ruled a homicide based on evidence of traumatic injuries and signs of abuse on the child.
Now, police have said they are looking for Diaz and Edwards, who are believed to be driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier with the Michigan license plate DTR 1854.
Both suspects are wanted for murder, second degree murder, first degree child abuse, and torture. Fields is also charged as a habitual offender.
According to court records, Fields was arrested and charged on May 20, 2016, in Romulus with multiples crimes including firearm possession, firearm possession by a felon, and domestic violence. He was not convicted of those crimes.
Court records also show that Diaz was charged three days later in Wayne County with firearm possession, altering identification, and possession of prescription forms. She reached plea deal in July of 2016 and was sentenced to probation.
Gabby's father and grandparents were not involved in the death. They say Gabby's mother had custody of the child at the time.
"She didn't have to pass the way she did but I hope we get justice for her really soon. I know we may not have a lot of information at all, but, it just hurts," says Kyle Barrett, Gabby's father.
"She was a ball of joy. She always had a smile on her face, loved to play. She would run around the house when we had her always with a big ole smile on her face," says her grandmother, Deborah Barret. "Keep flying, Gabby. Keep flying. We're watching you and we love you."
