Mother speaks out after daughter's death
Angela Cimino, the mother of Giorgina Nigro who died last week allegedly at the hand of her husband Vito, wants to encourage others to speak out and not sit idle if they think someone they love is being abused.
Vito, who owns a salon in Woodbridge, is accused of killing his wife then trying to kill himself. He is hospitalized in stable condition.
Cimino said the relationship was doomed from the beginning.
They couple met when Giorgina was 17 and Vito was about 10 years older, Cimino said. They got married without her family's blessing.
Then, Cimino said, the alleged abuse started. She spoke about Giorgina being kicked in the stomach and about black eyes and bloody noses.
Five years ago, according to Cimino, the abuse was so bad that Giorgina was fed up and was ready to leave and she actually did try to divorce Vito.
Back then, he tried to kill himself in the same manner, but survived.
Fast forward to the present, and it seems things were getting worse. Even the children were getting violent, Cimino said.
Last Thursday, the couple was scheduled to go to couples counseling.
Vito dropped two of their kids off at day care at 7 a.m. and returned.
But, according to Cimino, Vito bludgeoned Giorgina in her sleep. Then he tried to kill himself by jumping off the Garden State Parkway.
