NY Gov. Cuomo touts special prosecutor in NAACP speech
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has told a gathering of the NAACP that New York is working to restore public trust in law enforcement following the deaths of unarmed civilians at the hands of police.
The Democratic governor made a rare trip outside of New York Wednesday to address the NAACP convention in Philadelphia.
Cuomo said it's imperative to ensure people of all races and backgrounds have faith in law enforcement.
An executive order he signed last week directs the state attorney general's office to investigate cases in which police kill unarmed civilians or when there is a question of whether the civilian was armed and dangerous.
Cuomo also touted efforts to reduce incarceration rates and end New York's policy of prosecuting and locking up 16- and 17-year-old offenders as adults.
