Officials: Lamar County kindergartner brings gun to school

A Lamar County kindergarten student was found with a gun at school Thursday morning.

Lamar County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jute Wilson confirmed a 6-year-old Lamar County Primary student brought an unloaded small caliber pistol to school.

The 6-year-old showed the weapon to a fellow student, then that classmate told an adult. Officials said the adult immediately secured the backpack where the gun was being stored and notified administrators.

No one was hurt and school officials don't believe the child intended on hurting anyone.

"The weapon was never loaded, brandished, or used to threaten anyone," Dr. Wilson said. "We are proud of the classmates, staff members, and administration who handled the situation quickly and safely. We are especially proud of the young classmate who notified an adult of the matter.
