PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- Phoenix police say an officer was critically injured in a shooting with a suspect on Thursday night.

According to Sgt. Mercedes Fortune with Phoenix police, the shooting happened at around 8:00 p.m., in the area of Cactus and Cave Creek.

Both the officer and the suspect were taken to the hospital in critical condition, and Sgt. Fortune said there are no other suspects outstanding.

The officer, according to Sgt. Fortune, has been with the department for one year.

"It's one of those things that we say a lot: we don't know what's gonna happen when you put on the uniform," said Sgt. Fortune, during the briefing. "You come to work, and you hope for the best, you know, understanding that not everybody, obviously, wants to cause us harm, but you just never know."

This is the 34th officer-involved shooting for the Phoenix Police Department this year.
