Prague zoo confirms birth of three rare lemurs

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - A zoo in Prague says their attempts to breed a critically endangered species - the white-belted ruffed lemurs - are on the right track.

Three were born on April 22 and are said to be doing well.

Zoo officials say it's difficult to breed the lemur subspecies because they can become pregnant just one day a year.

The mothers also tend to completely neglect their babies.

The three lemurs still don't have names.

According to the Prague Zoo, there are only 88 of them living in captivity.

Around 10,000 live in the wild in their native Madagascar, which is down more than 80 percent in the last 21 years.
