Schools closed over possible 'security threat'

NUTLEY, N.J. (FOX5NY) - A New Jersey school district closed all public schools for Friday because of a threatening video that was online.

Nutley Public Schools Superintendent Julie Glazer said late Thursday evening that the district was erring on the side of safety to close, citing a "security threat." The Nutley Police Department says it is actively investigating a video posted to Instagram.

Police say there does not appear to be an active threat from a preliminary investigation, but they are continuing to investigate. In a statement, they said that they had spoken to the individual that posted the victim and detectives were in the process of speaking with all of the individuals who appeared in it as part of the investigation.

Police say they will release further updates as soon as they have more information in their investigation.

The district says it is using one of its two remaining emergency days that are generally set aside for snow closures.  They plan to reopen for classes a week from Monday. Schools are closed next week for the winter break.

District offices will reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Glazer said, "As both the Superintendent of the Nutley Public Schools and as a parent, and because of the nature of the world in which we live, there was no other decision to be made. Please rest assured that the safety and security of all our students and staff in the Nutley Public Schools remains our first priority."
