TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey remains a work in progress three years after Superstorm Sandy devastated some coastal communities and left thousands without electricity for days. Events to celebrate and to criticize recovery efforts are taking place around the state to mark Thursday's anniversary. Residents displaced by the storm continue to camp out across from the Statehouse in Trenton in a protest that began Tuesday.

Jersey City expands paid sick leave

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — More workers in New Jersey's second-largest city are eligible for paid sick leave. The Jersey City Council on Wednesday voted to extend the benefit to businesses that employ less than 10 employees. Under the measure, those employers must provide workers with up to 24 hours of paid sick leave and up to 16 hours of unpaid sick time annually. Those businesses previously only had to provide unpaid time off. Violators will face a maximum fine of $2,000.

Health exchange premium up 5 percent in New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The premium for a mid-level plan offered on the federal government's health insurance exchange will be up by 5 percent in New Jersey in 2016. But premiums will be lower, as expected, for people choosing a new plan that is receiving scrutiny from lawmakers. The federal government posted plan details on the exchange Monday. Customers can start making selections beginning Sunday. Many people can receive subsidies for care.

Rutgers-Camden to cover tuition for low-income students

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers University's Camden campus is redoing its financial aid system so new students from families making $60,000 a year or less won't have to pay any tuition. There also will be significant financial aid for students whose families have incomes from $60,001 to $100,000 under the "Bridging the Gap" program announced Monday.

FedEx predicts 12 percent increase in holiday shipments

With online shopping growing, FedEx is bracing for a record volumes this holiday season. The delivery company predicted Monday that shipments from Black Friday through Christmas Eve will rise 12.4 percent over last year to 317 million pieces. The company said that to handle the crush, it is hiring more than 55,000 seasonal workers and investing in automation and expansion.

UN unveils art installation to celebrate 70th anniversary

NEW YORK (AP) — The United Nations has unveiled a new art installation in Central Park to celebrate its 70th anniversary. The work by Spanish artist Cristobal Gabarron (Gah-bahr-ROHN') is titled "Enlightened Universe." The interactive installation is a sphere surrounded by a colorful spiral of 70 life-size figures, one for each year of the U.N.'s existence.

Southern New Jersey theater struggling to repay city loan

MILLVILLE, N.J. (AP) — A historic theater that brings once-major stars to a small southern New Jersey community is struggling to repay a loan from the city government meant to keep it afloat. Now some Millville officials say they should consider whether it's time to foreclose on the Levoy Theatre. The theater was home to vaudeville and movies a century ago but closed in 1974. It was reopened in 2012 with the help of a $1.6 million loan from the city.

Man wanted in New Jersey slaying struck by NYC subway

NEW YORK (AP) — A man suspected of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in the driveway of her New Jersey home needed surgery after he jumped in front of a New York City subway. Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says 44-year-old Arthur Lomando sustained severe injuries to his head and legs after he threw himself in front of the train in Manhattan on Thursday night. Lomando was taken to Harlem Hospital. His condition is not known.

J. Crew ends on-call scheduling for workers in US stores

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — J. Crew has agreed to end on-call scheduling at stores nationwide, following similar moves by several other major retailers, New York's attorney general said Friday. In April, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office wrote to 13 retailers questioning the practice of keeping workers on call for shifts on short notice. The letter also cited possible violations of New York's requirement to pay hourly staff for at least four hours when they report for work.
