Marching bands, floats and politicians marched up the famous thoroughfare Monday. The parade, beyond commemorating Columbus, has also become a celebration of New Yorkers of Italian heritage. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, who are each of Italian descent, were warmly received along the route.

Judge rules against Menendez's attempt to dismiss charges

U.S. District Judge William Walls ruled against Menendez on Thursday. Among the arguments were that prosecutors failed to allege an "official act" under bribery laws. Menendez has pleaded not guilty to the charges and plans to appeal.

The Miss America Organization says the Boardwalk parade is like other major events that rely on public agencies for security and that it wasn't privy to costs.

Police say car was stolen in New Jersey with teen inside

UNION, N.J. (AP) — Police say two men stole a New Jersey couple's car without realizing initially that their 15-year-old son was in the backseat. Authorities tell NJ.com (http://bit.ly/1LvflDn ) that the theft happened around 2 p.m. Sunday in Union. While a couple were out of the car for a stop at an ATM, two men jumped in and drove off before noticing the boy. Police say they stopped and ordered the teen to get out of the car. He was found later, uninjured.

Head of New Jersey cancer society killed by falling tree

COLTS NECK TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — The head of New Jersey's chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society was killed over the weekend when a tree fell on her vehicle during a storm. Police in Colts Neck Township say Stacey Weathers was alone in her convertible when the accident occurred around 4:25 p.m. Saturday on southbound Route 34.

Chick-fil-A opens in Manhattan

There was a long line Saturday at the corner of 37th Street and Sixth Avenue in midtown. All those people were waiting to get a taste of a popular chicken chain's debut in Manhattan. The first Chick fil A location in New York City celebrated its grand opening Saturday.
